The Learn-to-Row program is designed to introduce new rowers to the sport, from the proper way to hold an oar to porting a shell to actually going out and getting fast in a boat. Combined outings on the water ensure that freshman and novices get a feel for the water and get to experience being part of our team. Attending even a couple of sessions will be helpful for novices to understand the nature (and inherent awesomeness) of Crew.
The goal for Green Days for returning rowers is to get back to basics before we head to the hallways for Winter Conditioning and to ensure a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the rowing stroke. You'll also work with novices to help our team grow and thrive.
Participation in fall rowing is OPTIONAL but highly encouraged for new rowers. Participation is not required to have a great career as a new rower later in the season.
**Please note that for fall rowing, Oakton Crew does not provide transportation to and from the river. We encourage participants to carpool if possible. Parents will be responsible for organizing their own carpools.
PLEASE HAVE ALL YOUR FORMS TURNED IN & REGISTER BEFORE YOU GO TO THE RIVER!!
ALL PARTICIPANTS (New & Returning) MUST REGISTER FOR FALL ROWING & HAVE ALL FORMS TURNED IN BEFORE HEADING TO THE RIVER ON YOUR FIRST DAY!
**If you already have a VHSL physical on file for the current school year for another sport or activity, you do not need to file a second copy.
Until this form is submitted AND posted by the Activities Office, your rower will not be able to participate in Green Days.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO THE RIVER?
For Fall Rowing, rowers should wear appropriate work-out clothing, including sneakers AND SOCKS, shorts and a t-shirt, and should consider layering for warmth (the river can get breezy in the fall). Leggings, sweatshirts, and a windbreaker can help if the weather forecast is brisk.
YOU SHOULD ALSO BRING:
☐ FULL PLASTIC WATERBOTTLE
☐ SUNBLOCK
☐ HAT & SUNGLASSES
☐ HAND TOWEL
CANCELLATION POLICY:
We row in light winds or moderate rain, but in the event of severe weather (lightning, high winds, heavy downpours) LTR/GD will be canceled or moved indoors at OHS for the day. Please check TeamSnap (you will receive an invitation to join the OHS crew account when you register) for updates if the weather is bad.
By registering for Oakton Crew Fall Rowing, parents and students agree that photos and videos of their likeness may be used by the Club to highlight our activities and to promote our team. You may opt out of this agreement by submitting a written Photo Opt-Out Form.
