Head Coach Tim Callahan -
I was happy to be a part of bringing Oakton Crew to the next level during the 2007 and 2008 Spring seasons. In the fall of 2006 I inherited a team with a very good foundation thanks to a strong, active parents board and coaches like Tom Bennett and Dane Underwood. But, when I met with the varsity girls (who I coached day to day) they had a simple goal: "We don't want to come in last anymore." Unfortunately, new programs lose a lot in the first couple years while rowers gain experience, strength, technique, and stamina.
So, we went to work. Tom Bennett coached a very motivated group of Freshman girls who had great success in 2007. Dane had the boys rowing strong and happy. And the Varsity girls were excited to come in second and third in many races.
As the team grew in numbers and several rowers got involved in fall and winter training, attendance improved, a competitive drive increased, and the culture changed. A program that began by encouraging students to try a new sport while maintaining a major commitment to other extracurriculars began to take off. The more you rowed and erged, the stronger the rower became. Competition increased for seats in faster boats. The rowers began to depend on each other to get better and faster by working harder together.
We began to see more and more success. We brought boats to more competitive regattas like Stotesbury in Philadelphia and then qualified to race at the Scholastic National Regatta. Rowing became more fun. I loved seeing the kids enjoy spending so much time together. And their parents liked being a part of it too, hosting many crew team gatherings at their homes.
We all pulled together and were happy to see teammates succeed at the highest level as our lightweight girls four with coxswain went undefeated locally and won gold at the State Championship Regatta.
